Lăng Ông (Tomb of Lê Văn Duyệt)

Elaborate tomb-temple of a revered Vietnamese military hero in Bình Thạnh district

Lăng Ông — "Tomb of the Lord" — is the most important historical temple in Ho Chi Minh City, commemorating Lê Văn Duyệt (1764–1832), the military governor of southern Vietnam who was one of the most powerful figures of the early Nguyễn dynasty. He is credited with developing Saigon into a major port city and maintaining stability in the south.

The complex includes the tomb itself (a large stone mound) and a series of temple buildings housing shrines, portrait paintings, and artifacts from his life. The site is an active place of worship and pilgrimage; Vietnamese people come here to pray for good fortune and guidance. The Lăng Ông festival in the eighth lunar month brings thousands of worshippers. The temple is in Bình Thạnh district, a short taxi ride from District 1.
