In the southern part of the city stand the ruins of a temple dedicated to Athtar, the South Arabian god of the Morning Star (the equivalent of Venus). Sixteen columns and their connecting beams remain standing, making this one of the most visually striking ancient monuments in Yemen. The temple was built by the Ma'in civilization, which flourished here between roughly the 4th and 1st centuries BCE as a trading kingdom along the incense routes.
