When to Go

The Hadramawt sits at the southern edge of the great desert and is very hot for most of the year. Summer temperatures from May to September regularly exceed 40 degrees by mid-morning. The winter months — November to March — are dry and pleasant by day, sometimes cold at night, and are the only practical season for travel.

Before the current war, the cooler months also coincided with the main Sufi pilgrimage gatherings in Tarim, which drew thousands of visitors from across the Indian Ocean. Note that any travel to Yemen at the present time involves serious security risks; the entries here describe what is or was here rather than recommending a visit.
