Known locally as the Throne of Bilqis (the Queen of Sheba), the Barran Temple was dedicated to the Sabaean moon god Almaqah. Inscriptions also mention Dhat Hameem (the sun) and Athtar (Venus). German archaeological excavations revealed two historical phases: an earlier oval structure and a later rectangular temple built around it. Five tall pillars still stand, visible from a distance across the desert plain and among the most iconic images of ancient Yemen.
