Bonegilla was Australia's largest and longest-running postwar migrant reception centre. More than 300,000 people passed through the camp between 1947 and 1971, many arriving from Europe with little English and few clear plans beyond starting again.
The preserved Block 19 site is one of the region's most important places. It is not pretty, but the plain huts, displays, and personal stories explain a huge part of modern Australia better than a monument could.
