Albury-Wodonga

Twin Murray River city split by the New South Wales-Victoria border and rich in borderland history.

Albury-Wodonga is a twin city on the Murray River, with Albury in New South Wales and Wodonga in Victoria. For travellers it works as one place: a border crossing, rail town, river city, and useful base for the wineries, gold towns, and alpine country nearby.

It is easy to dismiss Albury-Wodonga as a Sydney-Melbourne stopover, but that sells it short. The state border gives the city a real story: customs posts, railway gauges, river trade, immigration camps, and grand 20th-century plans to build a national growth centre inland. The best day here mixes the river and botanic gardens with the Murray Art Museum Albury, Monument Hill, and the sobering Bonegilla Migrant Experience.

The city also makes a practical break in a long overland trip. Trains, coaches, and the Hume Highway all meet here, but the town is most rewarding if you stop long enough to understand why the Murray mattered.
