Southern Highlands Wine Region

Cool-climate wineries producing pinot noir, chardonnay, and sparkling wines around Bowral

The Southern Highlands is one of Australia's cooler wine regions, sitting at elevation and benefiting from maritime influence from the coast to the east. The vineyards clustered around Bowral, Moss Vale, and Sutton Forest produce pinot noir, chardonnay, and sparkling wines that reflect the cooler climate.

Several wineries offer cellar door tastings and are set in beautiful countryside — rolling green hills with views back toward the escarpment. It is not Napa Valley in scale, but for a half-day out from Bowral with decent wine, it works well. Centennial Vineyards is the most prominent operation in the area and has a restaurant worth considering for lunch.
