One of the estate wineries in the Broke Fordwich sub-region, occupying a patch of deep alluvial soil where Wollombi Brook drains the surrounding hills. The winery concentrates on the Hunter Valley's two signature varieties: Semillon, which starts tight and citrus-driven and develops into something remarkably complex with ten or fifteen years in the bottle, and Shiraz, which here tends to be more restrained and peppery than the big extracted styles found elsewhere.
The cellar door is set among the vines, making it a pleasantly pastoral stop. This is the sort of place where you can sit with a glass and watch the valley without the ambient noise that follows the tour buses further south. A few smaller producers in the immediate Broke area share the same quality of light and soil; the winery can point you toward neighbours worth a stop.
