Byron Bay sits on the far north coast of New South Wales, about 770 kilometres north of Sydney and 170 kilometres south of Brisbane.
By plane, the closest airport is Ballina Byron Gateway Airport (BNK), 30 kilometres south. Jetstar and Virgin fly there from Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. Transfers to Byron take about 35 minutes by taxi or shuttle bus. Gold Coast Airport (OOL) is about 90 kilometres north and has more flights, including some international services from Asia and New Zealand; the Byron Bay Express shuttle runs regularly between the airport and town.
By train, the NSW TrainLink coach-and-rail service connects Byron Bay with Sydney (around 11–12 hours) and Brisbane (around 3.5 hours). The journey from Sydney involves a train to the north coast and then a connecting coach. It is cheaper than flying and more scenic, but slow.
By car from Brisbane, take the Pacific Motorway (M1) south and then the Pacific Highway through the Tweed Valley — about 2 hours in normal traffic. From Sydney, the Pacific Highway north takes 9–10 hours.
By bus, Greyhound and Premier Motor Service operate long-distance coach routes connecting Byron Bay with Sydney, Brisbane, and other east coast cities. Greyhound's East Coast Pass is popular with backpackers.
