Byron Bay's appeal is built on beaches, surf, and the long walk out to Cape Byron. The lighthouse at the eastern tip of the continent is the obvious pilgrimage, but the town has more going on: dolphins offshore most mornings, humpback whales from June to November, and Julian Rocks for excellent snorkelling and diving. The beaches themselves vary considerably in character — Main Beach is the social hub, Tallow Beach is wilder and emptier, and The Pass offers one of the most enjoyable waves on the east coast for surfers of all levels.
