The Pass

The Pass is the surf spot at the northeastern end of the cape, where a rock shelf creates a right-hand point break that peels for up to 200 metres on a good swell. It is one of the most beginner-friendly quality waves in Australia: the break is predictable, the water clear, and the bottom is sand rather than reef for most of the ride. On small days it is ideal for longboarding; when a decent north-easterly swell arrives it holds shape and gets more serious.

The small beach at The Pass is backed by a patch of coastal scrub and has a car park with basic facilities. The walk around the headland from Main Beach takes about 20 minutes, following the cape track, which is worth doing for the views alone. Dolphins often surf the same break alongside paddlers.

Non-surfers will enjoy watching from the rocks on the southern side of the point — the long rides make for good spectating.
