East End

Newcastle's creative precinct, with galleries, bars, and heritage buildings along Hunter Street

The East End is the stretch of Hunter Street and its surrounding lanes between the Civic precinct and the harbour foreshore — a once-neglected strip of heritage commercial buildings that has become the city's most interesting neighbourhood over the past decade. The buildings are a mix of Victorian sandstone, interwar brick, and brutalist concrete, and many have been converted into small bars, restaurants, galleries, and studios without losing their industrial character.

The precinct is walkable and compact. The Lock-Up cultural centre, the Newcastle Art Gallery, the former railway station — now a tourist information hub and events venue — and a cluster of independent businesses are all within a few minutes of each other. The atmosphere is genuinely creative rather than the polished "arts precinct" of many cities; the patched-up and repurposed feel of the neighbourhood gives it an energy that more complete restorations often lack.
