Newcastle Beach is the most central of the city's ocean beaches, reachable on foot from the city centre in about fifteen minutes through the East End. It is a broad, east-facing surf beach with consistent swell and a long stretch of sand backed by a grassy reserve. The Newcastle Ocean Baths, carved into the rock platform at the northern end, are a heritage-listed tidal swimming pool dating from 1922 — excellent for lap swimming when the surf is too rough for the open beach.
A row of changing sheds, a café, and a boardwalk connect the beach to the city-side parks. On summer weekends this is where most of the city's population seems to end up. Surf lifesaving patrols operate during summer months.
