Old Court House and Police Station

Nineteenth-century stone courthouse survivor from Darwin's rough early administrative years

The Old Court House and Police Station is one of the rare pieces of colonial Darwin that still gives a physical sense of the town before war, cyclones, and rebuilding changed almost everything. The stone courthouse dates from the 1880s and later served through several official lives, including naval use during the Second World War.

It is a modest stop, but worthwhile if you are walking the Esplanade and trying to understand how little early Darwin has survived. The building's interest is in its endurance: white ants, bombing, Cyclone Tracy, and redevelopment all passed through the city, and this small administrative complex remained.
