The Parap Village Markets run every Saturday morning and are the best food market in Darwin. The stalls lean heavily toward Southeast Asian — laksa, satay, noodles, dumplings, fresh tropical fruit — reflecting Darwin's position as Australia's northern gateway and its long connections with Indonesia, Timor, and Southeast Asia generally.
The market is busy from about 8am until noon. It is as much a social gathering as a shopping trip; half the Territory seems to come through at some point on a Saturday morning. Buy a bowl of laksa, find a spot in the park, and watch the crowd. There is also good produce: tropical fruit you won't find in southern Australian supermarkets, fresh fish, and a variety of Southeast Asian groceries. The Parap area around the market has a cluster of good casual restaurants for later in the day.
