The oldest surviving building in Queensland, built by convict labour in 1828 as a treadmill-operated grain mill on the hill at Spring Hill. The windmill design failed to work effectively and was converted to a treadmill, where convicts provided the power. It later served as a signal tower and a telegraph station. The tower is heritage-listed and visible from the city centre.
