The Queensland Museum occupies a grand 1890s sandstone building in the South Bank Cultural Precinct, right alongside GOMA and the Queensland Art Gallery. The museum covers natural history, Indigenous Queensland, and the human history of the state — from dinosaur fossils and a full blue whale skeleton to exhibits on early European settlement and the experience of Queensland's diverse communities. Entry to the permanent collection is free.
The dinosaur gallery is the standout for most visitors: Queensland has produced some of Australia's most significant dinosaur finds, and the museum presents them well. The muttaburrasaurus and kronosaurus specimens are genuinely impressive. Allow two hours for a thorough visit or one hour if you want the highlights. The museum cafe and the surrounding South Bank precinct are good options for lunch before or after.
