Thomson River Sunset Cruise

The Thomson River sunset cruise is the best way to experience the Longreach landscape from water level. Two operators run the experience: Outback Aussie Tours uses a modern catamaran for 360-degree views, while Outback Pioneers operates the Thomson Belle paddlewheeler for a more atmospheric ride. Both follow the longest waterhole on the Thomson, about 14 kilometres northwest of town along the Landsborough Highway.

Both experiences include a sunset cruise followed by a camp oven dinner served outdoors with live entertainment — bush poetry, songs, and storytelling. It is the complete outback evening: river gums silhouetted against the darkening sky, a fire burning, and the kind of silence you only get several hundred kilometres from the nearest city.

Pickups begin around 4:30 pm, adjusted seasonally to catch the best light. Book in advance in peak season (April to September). Prices are around $150-160 per person including dinner. The experience runs about three hours.

A story
The Thomson River is not technically a continuous river — it is a series of waterholes connected by channels that only flow in flood events. The cruise operates on the longest waterhole, which stretches 14 kilometres. In the late afternoon light, when the river red gums turn gold and herons stand motionless at the edges, this system of disconnected waterholes feels like the most improbable thing: an oasis in red dust that has sustained life on this plain for tens of thousands of years.
