The best time to visit Longreach is April to September — the cooler, drier months when temperatures are bearable and the outback light is at its best. During the summer (December to February), temperatures regularly exceed 40°C and the landscape bakes. The tourist season peaks around Easter and the winter school holidays.
The Channel Country to the west can flood dramatically in a good rain year, cutting roads for weeks. If you are planning to go further outback from Longreach, check road conditions before you travel.
