Maroochydore Beach

Maroochydore Beach is a long, open stretch of clean sand running north from the mouth of the Maroochy River. It faces directly into the South Pacific swell, which makes it a reliable spot for bodyboarding and beginner surfing, while the northern end near the river mouth is calmer and better suited to younger children.

The beach is patrolled by lifeguards during season and backed by low parkland rather than high-rise towers, which keeps it from feeling overdeveloped. Early mornings bring joggers and local swimmers; by mid-morning the bodyboarders are out in numbers.

A story
The beach gained a grim footnote in aviation history on 30 December 1950, when a Douglas DC-3 operated by Queensland Airlines crashed into the sand shortly after takeoff, killing several people aboard — an incident still remembered locally as the Maroochy air crash.
