HMAS Brisbane Wreck Dive

The wreck of the guided-missile destroyer ex-HMAS Brisbane was scuttled three nautical miles off Mooloolaba in 2005 and now sits upright in 28 metres of water. It is one of the most popular wreck dives in Australia. The hull is intact, the bridge and the gun turrets are accessible to suitably qualified divers, and a thriving population of mackerel, snapper, kingfish and the occasional grey nurse shark has colonised the structure.

Dive operators in Mooloolaba run day trips year-round. The site is within the HMAS Brisbane Conservation Park, so a permit is required — included automatically in any commercial trip. Visibility is best in the cooler months from June to October.

A story
The ex-HMAS Brisbane saw active service in Vietnam and the first Gulf War before being decommissioned in 2001. The navy stripped her of fuel, oils, asbestos and ordnance, then scuttled her in 2005 as an artificial reef — one of the world's first warships sunk specifically for recreational diving.
