First Point Surf Break

First Point is the most famous of Noosa's national-park headland breaks: a long, clean, peeling right-hander that runs from the rocky point along the edge of the bay, producing rides that can stretch for hundreds of metres on the right swell. It is a longboarder's wave above all — slow, mellow, and forgiving — and on any good day the line-up will be packed three and four deep.

Beginners take lessons at Main Beach; intermediates paddle out at Little Cove. First Point itself is best left to people who know the etiquette. Even watching from the rocks is a pleasure: the geometry of the wave and the silhouettes of riders against the cliffs is half the appeal of being in Noosa at all.

A story
Noosa's annual Festival of Surfing is one of the world's biggest longboarding events. When the swell is up, you'll see four generations of surfers in the water at First Point at the same time — including elders who have been riding the same wave since the 1960s.
