Langmeil is based on the site of a historic winery in Tanunda that dates back to the 1840s, and its key attraction is the Freedom Vineyard — a small block of ancient pre-phylloxera Shiraz vines that may be the oldest of their kind anywhere. The cellar door is set in old stone buildings at the back of Langmeil Road, and the atmosphere is warm and unhurried.
The winery produces a broad range of Barossa wines, and the cellar door staff are knowledgeable and unpretentious. It's a good contrast to the larger, more corporate estate experiences — the scale is small enough that you can actually talk about the vines and the wine rather than moving through a tasting production line.
