Old Hobart Town

Detailed model village reconstructing Hobart as it looked in the 1820s

Old Hobart Town is a carefully built miniature reconstruction of Hobart in the 1820s, set in Richmond rather than Hobart itself. The model uses hundreds of small figures and buildings to show the early colonial town at the scale of a village you can walk around in minutes.

It is a good companion to Richmond Gaol and the bridge because it turns Tasmania's convict-era history into something visual and immediate. Children usually enjoy the detail; adults will get more from it if they read the captions and look for the social hierarchy built into the streets.
