Her Majesty's Theatre

1875 theatre on Lydiard Street — the oldest purpose-built working theatre in Australia

Address 17 Lydiard Street South

Her Majesty's, opened in 1875, is the oldest purpose-built theatre still operating in Australia. The Italianate façade with its giant columns is one of the great Lydiard Street buildings; the interior is a horseshoe of three tiered galleries decorated in plaster, gilt, and ruby velvet.

It still works as a regional touring house — drama, music, ballet, comedy, the Royal South Street Society eisteddfod in spring (one of the oldest amateur performing-arts festivals in the world). Even outside performance times, the front-of-house bar is open and you can usually look in. Self-guided audio tours run intermittently.

A story
Dame Nellie Melba sang here in 1908 to a sold-out hall and reportedly refused to leave the stage between encores. The Italianate façade hides a cast-iron and timber auditorium that has been continuously used since the gas-lamp era.
