Shepparton Art Museum

The Shepparton Art Museum — always called SAM by locals — is genuinely one of the best regional galleries in Australia. The new building, opened in 2022, is a striking terracotta-clad angular structure that announced itself as a serious cultural institution. You might arrive expecting a modest collection and leave impressed.

The collection is strongest in Australian ceramics, which makes sense given the region's history in manufacturing and craft. There are significant works by major Australian painters alongside an excellent ceramics holding that covers everything from colonial-era domestic ware to contemporary art ceramics. The international wing shows ambition. Admission is free.

A story
The original SAM opened in 1971 as one of Australia's first purpose-built regional galleries, funded largely by local industry. When the city decided to rebuild it, they didn't opt for a modest upgrade — the 2022 building by Denton Corker Marshall is a dramatic angular form clad in terracotta, visible from across the flat valley and wholly unexpected in a city best known for canned fruit.
