Hopkins Falls

Basalt-rimmed waterfall on the Hopkins River, best after winter rain.

Hopkins Falls drops in a broad curtain over dark basalt on the Hopkins River, about 15 kilometres northeast of Warrnambool. It is not the tallest waterfall in Victoria, but its width and easy access make it a rewarding detour, especially after winter or spring rain when the whole ledge is running.

A short path leads from the car park to viewing platforms above the falls, and the picnic area makes it an easy half-hour stop on the way between Warrnambool and the inland dairy country. In dry spells the flow can shrink considerably, so treat it as a seasonal sight rather than a guaranteed spectacle.
