Great Ocean Drive

The Great Ocean Drive is a 40km self-drive loop starting from central Esperance that passes the town's best beach sequence in a single morning excursion. The route runs south from town to Twilight Beach, Salmon Beach, and a series of lookout points over the Southern Ocean before looping back. Each beach is slightly different — some sheltered for swimming, some exposed for watching surf, some with rock platforms and sea caves to explore — but all share the same extraordinary combination of white sand and turquoise water.

The best strategy is to start early, park at each beach and spend 20–30 minutes walking and swimming. The beaches are generally safe for swimming in calm conditions, though the Southern Ocean can produce unexpectedly strong currents — check the surf conditions before entering. The drive itself is easy, mostly sealed, and well-signposted. The lookout points offer good views of the Recherche Archipelago — the chain of islands offshore that includes Middle Island with its pink lake.

A story
The turquoise water colour along the Great Ocean Drive comes from the extreme purity of the Southern Ocean here — low in phytoplankton and organic matter compared to most coastlines, which makes the water scatter light in the blue-green wavelengths. The sand is similarly unusual: ground from quartzite over millions of years, it has an abnormally high silica content that gives it its white colour and squeaky texture. The combination is genuinely unusual — most beaches with this colour of water have darker sand.
