Kalbarri Skywalk

The Kalbarri Skywalk is the centrepiece of Kalbarri National Park's upgraded visitor infrastructure. Two steel platforms extend 100 metres over the rim of the Murchison Gorge, suspended 100 metres above the canyon floor, providing an unobstructed view up and down the serpentine gorge and across to the opposite cliff face. The walk from the car park is about 1.4 kilometres each way over a well-paved path through the spinifex and mulga scrub of the park plateau.

The skywalk is spectacular in the morning when light comes from the east and illuminates the red and orange banding in the gorge walls. Sunset from the platforms is also excellent. The structures are open 8am to 5pm, with a small entry fee that covers the national park as well. The platforms are fully enclosed in glass balustrades, making them suitable for all ages — though those with vertigo will find the transparent flooring sections challenging. The nearby Kalbarri National Park visitor centre has excellent interpretive displays on the Murchison River geology and ecology.

A story
The Kalbarri Skywalk, which opened in 2020, extends 100 metres out over the edge of the Murchison Gorge on two cantilevered platforms, 100 metres above the canyon floor. The construction presented significant engineering challenges — the platforms had to be anchored into the ancient Tumblagooda sandstone without damaging the rock, and all materials had to be transported along the unsealed park road. The steel structure is designed to flex slightly in wind, which is disconcerting to first-time visitors.
