Fremantle Craft Beer Scene

Fremantle has a strong claim to being the craft beer capital of Western Australia, anchored by Little Creatures at the Fishing Boat Harbour but extending well beyond it. The Sail and Anchor on South Terrace was one of Australia's first craft beer pubs when it opened in the 1980s, and it still draws a good crowd with its rotating taps of local and imported beers. The Norfolk Hotel on South Street is another solid choice, with an outdoor garden that is particularly pleasant on warm evenings. Between them, these venues have given Fremantle a beer drinking culture that goes well beyond the standard Australian pub experience.

WA has a notably strong craft beer scene generally — Feral Brewing in the Swan Valley, Gage Roads near Fremantle, and Nail Brewing in Bassendean are among the most respected producers — and Fremantle benefits from being the informal hub of that scene. If you are visiting Perth with any interest in craft beer, spending an afternoon in Fremantle is a better use of time than trying to navigate the city's bar scene. The combination of good beer, good food at Little Creatures, and the character of the Victorian port town around you makes it one of the more enjoyable afternoons you can have in WA.
