Subiaco

Subiaco is one of Perth's most comfortable inner suburbs, about three kilometres west of the CBD and easily reached by train from Perth station. Rokeby Road is the main strip, and it delivers what Subiaco does best: good cafes, a strong restaurant scene, independent bookshops, delis, wine bars, and the kind of neighbourhood businesses that suggest people actually live here and have opinions about where to eat lunch. It is upmarket without being ostentatious, and the tree-lined streets of Federation and Edwardian houses behind the commercial strip are worth wandering through if you like the architecture.

Subiaco Market takes place on Saturdays and draws a good crowd for fresh produce, artisan food, and street food from various cuisines. The suburb was long associated with Subiaco Oval (now Optus Stadium has taken the main fixtures), but it remains the kind of place that Perth people think of as a benchmark for a certain kind of inner-city good life. The wine bars along Rokeby Road and the surrounding streets are particularly good — Perth has a strong wine culture given its proximity to Margaret River and the Swan Valley, and Subiaco's bars tend to take it seriously. MUST Winebar on Hay Street has been one of the city's best for years.
