Fitzgerald River National Park

UNESCO biosphere with cliffs, beaches, and over 1,800 plant species

A vast coastal wilderness park stretching west and south of Hopetoun, with the Ravensthorpe-side access via the East Mount Barren road. The park covers ancient quartzite peaks ("the Barrens"), white-sand beaches, sea cliffs, and heathland rich in proteas and eucalypts.

Whales pass close inshore between June and October — Point Ann is one of the most reliable land-based southern right whale viewing spots in the country. Bring fuel, water, and a paper map: mobile coverage drops out in the park and the gravel tracks demand attention.

A story
The Fitzgerald holds nearly 20 percent of all plant species recorded in Western Australia within just 0.2 percent of its area. Around 75 species grow nowhere else, including the showy royal hakea, whose stiff variegated leaves look painted. It is the kind of place botanists fly across the world to see.
