Atiu Coffee Factory

A small coffee plantation and processing operation near the village of Areora. The owners run informal tours showing the heritage coffee trees, the sun-drying beds, and the hand-roasting process; the on-site shop sells beans and ground coffee in branded bags that travel well as gifts.

The plantation supplies most of the cafés on Rarotonga and is one of the only producing coffee operations in the southern Cook Islands. Call ahead — they are usually flexible but sometimes closed for harvest or family events.

A story
Coffee was introduced to Atiu by missionaries in the 1860s and was a major export until the 1950s. The plantations were abandoned for decades and reverted to bush; the current operation revived the heritage trees in the 1980s under Juergen Manske-Eimke, a German who married into the island.
