Getting Around

Getting around Fiji depends heavily on where you want to go. On Viti Levu, the main island, buses and taxis cover most ground. Buses are cheap and frequent, especially on the Queen's Road linking Nadi and Suva — the journey takes about four hours. Taxis are metered in towns but negotiate fares for longer journeys.

For the outer islands, you have three options. Fast catamarans depart from Port Denarau Marina near Nadi and reach the Mamanuca Islands in under an hour and the Yasawa Islands in about four hours. Slower cargo ferries connect Viti Levu with Vanua Levu and Taveuni — they're cheap but take considerably longer, often overnight. Inter-island flights with Fiji Link (the domestic arm of Fiji Airways) are quicker but more expensive; they serve Labasa, Savusavu, Taveuni, Kadavu, Levuka, and several other airstrips.

One thing to accept early: transport in Fiji runs on "Fiji time." Buses and ferries depart when they're ready, not necessarily when the schedule says. Build in flexibility, especially for ferry connections.

Car hire is available in Nadi and Suva for those who want to explore Viti Levu independently. Drive on the left.
