Lovoni Village

Lovoni sits inside the dormant crater of Ovalau's central volcano — a steep horseshoe of forested ridge wrapped around a small farming village. Half-day guided walks from Levuka follow the old colonial track up over the rim and down to the village, where you can meet local farmers, see the medicinal plant garden, and have a kava ceremony with the chief's family.

This is one of the more authentic village-visit experiences in Fiji because Lovoni operates the tours themselves. Wear good walking shoes; the climb up to the rim is steep.

A story
The Lovoni people held out against missionaries and the British longer than anyone else in Fiji — finally subdued in 1871 when colonial troops trapped them in their volcanic crater. The villagers were then sold as plantation labour, a deportation that remained a national grievance for generations.
