Mount Uluigalau is Taveuni's highest point at 1,241 metres, and the second-highest peak in Fiji. The mountain sits at the centre of the island's volcanic massif and is surrounded by dense rainforest, much of it within Bouma National Heritage Park. On clear days the summit offers views over both coasts of the island and across the Somosomo Strait to Vanua Levu.
The ascent is a serious hike — a full day return — requiring good fitness and a local guide. The trails are not well-marked and the forest is thick; getting lost without a guide is a real possibility. The rewards are the forest itself, the birding along the way (endemic species including orange dove and silktail are more often encountered at elevation), and the summit view if the cloud cooperates. Arrange guides through your guesthouse or resort.
