Mount Otemanu

The dominant volcanic peak of Bora Bora, visible from every point on the island and from far out in the lagoon. The silhouette of Otemanu and its companion peak Pahia (661 m) together create the jagged profile that makes Bora Bora instantly recognisable in photographs.

The summit of Otemanu cannot be safely reached without technical climbing equipment, but guided hikes to the ridgeline below the summit offer extraordinary panoramic views over the entire lagoon, the outer reef, and the neighbouring islands. The hike takes 4–5 hours round trip and is strenuous in the tropical heat. Start early (6–7am) before the sun becomes brutal. Several local guides offer the hike, and they are worth hiring both for safety and for their knowledge of the island's plant life and history.

A story
Otemanu means 'bird of the forest' in Tahitian and rises to 727 metres at the island's highest point — the ancient plug of a shield volcano that formed Bora Bora roughly three to four million years ago. The summit itself is a technical rock climb requiring ropes and experience, but the ridge below offers some of the most dramatic views in French Polynesia. A local guide is strongly recommended: the trails are poorly marked and the terrain is steep and dense with tropical vegetation.
