Currency and money. The US dollar is the official currency. Most guesthouses in Majuro accept credit cards, but take cash for anything outside the capital. ATMs exist in Majuro but are unreliable; bring enough dollars to cover your stay.
Visas. US citizens do not need a visa under the Compact of Free Association — you can enter and stay without limit. Citizens of most other countries can get a 30-day entry permit on arrival, extendable to 90 days. You will need an onward or return ticket and evidence of sufficient funds.
Health. Tap water is not safe to drink anywhere in the Marshalls; buy or filter. Typhoid and hepatitis A vaccinations are recommended. Visitors between 6 months and 62 years of age must show proof of measles vaccination before boarding vessels. Medical care in Majuro is adequate for minor problems; anything serious requires evacuation to Honolulu or Guam, so travel insurance with evacuation cover is essential.
Climate and clothing. The climate is tropical, hot and humid year-round, with average temperatures around 29°C. Rainfall varies across the atolls. Dress casually but modestly outside beach areas — shorts are not appropriate street wear. Lightweight cotton clothing is best.
Communications. Mobile coverage (NTA Mobile) exists in Majuro and on Ebeye. The outer islands have no mobile service; they use HF radio. Internet is available in Majuro but slow by most standards.
Time zone. The Marshall Islands is UTC+12, meaning it is on the same calendar day as eastern Australia but 21 hours ahead of New York.
Safety. The Marshall Islands has a low crime rate. Petty theft can occur in Majuro; take normal precautions. Typhoon season runs from November through April, though direct hits are rare.
