Getting Around

Within Majuro, shared taxis run along the single main road and are the only real form of public transport. Fares are $0.50 for anywhere in town, or around $4 for the 20-minute ride to the airport. Rental cars are available in Majuro, though the island has only about 30 kilometres of usable road, so you will not need one for long.

The outer atolls are connected by Air Marshall Islands, which operates domestic flights to 25 airstrips on 22 inhabited atolls. Schedules change often and cancellations are common; build extra time into any plan involving outer island travel. Field trip ships also serve the outer islands, but they run infrequently and with no fixed timetable — useful if you have time, impractical if you do not.

Kwajalein has its own airstrip, but access to Kwajalein Island itself is restricted to U.S. military personnel. Visitors arriving by air can transit to Ebeye, the neighboring Marshallese community, without special permission.

Renting a small boat in Majuro is the most satisfying way to reach Arno Atoll, which lies just across the lagoon. Arrange through guesthouses or ask at the dock.
