C1 Espresso

C1 Espresso occupies a former post office building on High Street and has made the most of its infrastructure inheritance: food arrives via pneumatic tube. The sliders, fries, and milkshakes travel through the original post office tube system from the kitchen to individual tables, emerging with a thump and a puff of air that never entirely loses its novelty. This could be a gimmick that obscures mediocre food, but the kitchen takes itself seriously enough that it does not need the tubes to justify the visit — they are a bonus.

The café runs all day from breakfast through dinner and the coffee is genuinely good, which matters because this is primarily a café that also does food rather than a restaurant with a tube delivery system. The building's original post office fittings have been preserved, including much of the timber joinery and the counter. High Street itself is one of the better streets in the city for independent retail and food, and C1 anchors the southern end.
