The earthquake rebuilt more than buildings — it reshuffled the restaurant landscape completely. Many of Christchurch's established restaurants were in the demolished CBD; the ones that survived found themselves in the middle of a building site. What has emerged is a younger, more experimental food scene than the city had before 2011, concentrated in the streets south of Cathedral Square and along the Avon. The Riverside Market is the most reliable single destination. Beyond that, the city rewards exploration.
