Mona Vale

Riverside heritage garden and homestead with lawns, roses, mature trees, and a quieter Christchurch pace.

Mona Vale is one of Christchurch's easiest escapes from the post-earthquake rebuild and traffic. The five-and-a-half-hectare garden sits beside the Avon, with lawns sliding down to the water, rose beds, old trees, a fernery, and a restored homestead that gives the place a gentler, Edwardian feel than the larger Botanic Gardens.

Come here when you want a calm walk rather than a checklist sight. It is especially good in spring and early summer, but the river, trees, and heritage buildings make it useful in any season when the weather is kind. Pair it with Riccarton House or Hagley Park if you are making a slow western loop from the centre.
