The Clay Cliffs are a set of sharp silt-and-gravel pinnacles about 10 km west of Omarama. They were built from ancient glacial river deposits and carved by erosion into narrow gullies and pale, fluted towers.
The cliffs are on private land, reached by a gravel road off Quailburn and Henburn roads. Bring cash or check the current payment details, drive slowly, and avoid treating it like a paved tourist car park. Once there, the walk into the ravines is short and memorable, especially in late light.
