Omarama is a small high-country town at a road junction between the Mackenzie Basin, Waitaki Valley, and the road south toward Lindis Pass. Most people first see it as a fuel and coffee stop, but the landscape around it has enough character to justify slowing down.
The town's strongest identity is in the air. Omarama is one of the Southern Hemisphere's best-known gliding centres, with mountain wave and thermal conditions that pull pilots toward the Southern Alps. On the ground, the Clay Cliffs are the easy headline: pale pinnacles and ravines cut into old glacial sediments on private land west of town.
Omarama is not a big destination in the Queenstown or Mount Cook sense. It is more useful as a one-day pause on a South Island road trip: fly if the weather is good, walk into the cliffs, soak in hot tubs if that is your mood, and keep an eye on the dry gold light that gives the place its Maori name, "place of light."
