Buffalo Beach is Whitianga's town beach, a long sandy curve that starts close to the centre and runs north along Mercury Bay. It is easy, sociable, and best for a swim or a barefoot walk rather than solitude.
The name comes from HMS Buffalo, wrecked here in 1840. A small memorial and anchor near the beach are worth a pause if you are following the town's maritime history.
