Whitianga

Mercury Bay harbour town with beaches, boat trips, and Captain Cook history on the Coromandel coast.

Whitianga is the main town on the eastern side of the Coromandel Peninsula, sitting on a sheltered harbour at Mercury Bay. It is a practical beach town rather than a polished resort: fishing boats, holiday houses, cafes, and summer traffic all crowd the same small centre.

The harbour gives Whitianga its shape. On the town side, Buffalo Beach runs north in a long, easy strip of sand. Across the water, a short passenger ferry lands near Cooks Beach and the tracks up to Shakespeare Cliff, where the bay opens out in a sweep of pale beaches and blue coves.

Whitianga also has enough of its own story to be more than a base for Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach. The Mercury Bay Museum covers Kupe, local Maori history, Cook's 1769 visit, the wreck of HMS Buffalo, kauri logging, and the old dairy factory that now holds the collection. It is small, but it gives the coast some useful depth.

If you have one day, cross the harbour early, walk to Shakespeare Cliff and Lonely Bay, come back for the museum, then end with a soak at The Lost Spring or a boat trip into Te Whanganui-a-Hei Marine Reserve. The famous Coromandel sights are nearby, but Whitianga is not just the place where you buy petrol before going there.
