Paynes Ford

A limestone gorge on the edge of Kahurangi National Park, a short drive from Motueka, known for rock climbing and a short scenic walk. The Gorge Walk follows the Takaka River through the canyon — a one-hour return walk through lush native forest with the white limestone walls rising around you. Swimming in the river pools is excellent on hot days.

The rock climbing is the main reason sport climbers come here: there are dozens of routes on the limestone walls of varying grades, from beginner to advanced. The scenery is exceptional regardless of whether you climb. The gorge is a 20-minute drive from Motueka on the road to Golden Bay.
