Riuwaka Resurgence

Sacred spring and short forest walk where the Riuwaka River emerges from marble beneath Takaka Hill.

Te Puna Wai o Riuwaka, usually called the Riuwaka Resurgence, is where the north branch of the Riuwaka River pours out from the cave-riddled marble of Takaka Hill. The walk is short, cool, and green, with clear water running beside mossy rock and native bush before the track reaches the spring itself.

The place has deep significance for Te Atiawa and Ngati Rarua, so treat it as more than a pretty swimming hole. It makes an easy side trip from Motueka before or after heading over Takaka Hill, and it is especially good on a warm day when the shaded track and cold water feel like a small reward.
