Puhoi is a small riverside village north of Auckland, settled in the 1860s by German-speaking Bohemians from what is now the Czech Republic. It is tiny, but it has a stronger identity than many larger towns: a church, a museum, old family names, and a slow tidal river running through the valley.
It works best as a half-day or easy day trip. Visit the museum and church to understand the settlement story, then time a kayak trip down the Puhoi River toward Wenderholm if the tide is right. The village is not big enough to reward restless sightseeing, but it is a good place to slow down.
