Piha

Black-sand surf village west of Auckland, framed by Lion Rock and Waitakere rainforest

Piha is Auckland's wild west-coast beach village, close enough for a day trip but rough-edged enough to feel a long way from the city. The sand is black with iron, the surf comes in hard from the Tasman Sea, and Lion Rock splits the beach like a landmark from an old navigation chart.

This is not a gentle swimming beach. Piha is loved by surfers and photographers, and respected by lifeguards for its rips. Stay between the flags if you swim, and treat the sea as part of the scenery if patrols are not out.

The best visit mixes beach time with the bush behind it. Kitekite Falls sits a short walk inland through nikau palms and kauri forest, while North Piha gives the same black-sand drama with a little more space. Come for a few hours from Auckland, but bring shoes, water, and a healthy respect for the surf.

Things to Do

Piha's draw is the collision of surf, black sand, and Waitakere rainforest. Start at Lion Rock for the classic view, walk the beach at low tide, then head inland to Kitekite Falls if you want the place to feel less like a beach stop and more like a west-coast day out.
